Chapter Nine

Melanie went through the same morning routine as the day before: drinking room service coffee and rinsing her braids of the smell picked up in nightclubs the night before, while talking to her kids on the phone.

“Did you open Christmas presents?” she asked Thérèse.

“Everybody did.”

“What did you get?”

“I got a knit cap from Grandma and gloves from Grandpops.”

“What did Daddy give you?”

“Brother and I got coats from Daddy.”

“What toys did you get? Maybe a new dinosaur?”

“No more,” the girl said with a moan.

“No toys at all?”

“Daddy said the coat will be good for being warm.”

“I see. Is Daddy there? Can I talk to him, please?” In a couple of minutes, Josh came on the line. “You might want to take the call outside, Josh.”

“It’s cold. I can talk here. What do you want?”

“What’s the deal with the coat?”

“What coat?”

“Don’t act dumb with me. Why did Tay get a coat for Christmas and not a single toy?”

“What’s wrong with nice coats for them? Those set me back a pretty penny.”

“They’re coming home in a few days. You know, to the tropics. What in the heck are they going to do with coats here?”

“It’s the thought, Melanie.”

“The thought? You couldn’t give your kids a couple of toys for Christmas? You’re that much of a scrooge? Or are you that much of a tightwad?” Melanie got a newsflash of her own. “Oh, wait. Is this your way of punishing me? Be mean to the kids, which you know will make me mad? Guess what? You can stop with that agenda. I’ve been mad at you and will continue being so for the duration. Understand?”

“Get some therapy, Melanie.”

Melanie ground a knuckle into her eye tic. “A divorce is all the therapy I need, and guess what? I’m gonna make it hurt you so bad…”

The call ended. When she dialed back, it was Thérèse who answered. Once she had heard all about the exciting adventure of the long walk through the snow to the frozen pond on Christmas morning, it was time to end the call. The next call went to Bruce, wherever he was on the planet.

“I have some names and places for you to check, Bruce.”

“Merry Christmas to you too, Melanie.”

“Sorry. Just not in a merry mood this year.”

“Don’t tell the boss or she’ll expect it from me every holiday, but I came in to work today.”

“I’m your boss, Bruce.”

“Did my sucking up get me a raise?”

“Nope.”

“Let me have those names, Melanie. I just had a double tall, so my mind is abuzz with excitement.”

“Abuzz?”

“It’s an official Scrabble word.”

“There’s an official list of Scrabble words?” she asked. “Never mind. Their names are Chantrelle, a bartender at a place called Big Daddy’s in Kihei. In her thirties, no last name. I’m pretty sure she’s a she, but I’ve been wrong before.”

“Already on our radar. My guy on Maui checked her out. How about you talk to Mickey directly?”

“That’s his name? Give me his number and I’ll call him right now.”

“I’ll have him call you in a few minutes.
